Internship is unpaid and will be 8 to 12 weeks in length, 40 hours/week. Housing is available. Start dates available in May, June, and July. All interns will be very hands-on and should be confident in their ability to work in a variety of situations. Each intern will be expected to complete a skills checklist and a project.
New Mexico Wildlife Center, roughly 25 minutes north of Santa Fe, connects people and wildlife for an abundant tomorrow. In addition to our education programs, we rehabilitate approximately 800 animals (birds, mammals, and reptiles) each year from around the state, and have an excellent release rate. Please note: in New Mexico we are not allowed to rehabilitate coyote, fox, bats, skunk or raccoon, so opportunity to work with these animals is unlikely without special circumstance. There are four intern positions available in 2019.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- An interest in wildlife rehabilitation with some experience working with wild or domestic animals in a supervised animal care setting (zoo, rehabilitation, veterinary, biological research, etc.) is strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to take both written and verbal direction, follow care instructions and complete tasks.
- Team player; ability to work well with others, even on long days and in challenging situations.
- Good judgement and confidence to work independently are important, as is a good sense of humor.
- Current and recent students are given preference. Must be over 18 years to apply.
DUTIES:
Working closely with and under the supervision of the two staff Wildlife Rehabilitators, interns will:
- Learn wildlife care techniques:
- Preparation of diets and feeding animals.
- Safe restraint and handling of wildlife.
- Cleaning and maintenance of animal enclosures.
- Enclosure design and set up.
- Gain experience in wildlife rehabilitation:
- Physical assessment and stabilization of incoming patients.
- Feeding and care of nestling birds and young mammals.
- Administration of medications and fluids; bandaging; read radiographs.
- Following treatment plans, pre-release assessments.
- Participate in special projects – Each intern will complete one individual project in addition to general projects.
- Work closely with volunteers and other interns in a supportive manner.
