Science Education Specialist

 

Dedicated, energetic, exceptional educator needed to become a full-time Science Education Specialist at the Asombro Institute for Science Education in Las Cruces, New Mexico.  The successful candidate will become the sixth member of a motivated staff that works to increase natural scientific literacy through engaging, place-based education programs. Each year, Asombro provides hands-on, inquiry-based education programs to more than 22,000 K-12 students, 800 teachers, and 700 other adults in classrooms, schoolyards, and at the organization’s Chihuahuan Desert Nature Park.

 

The Science Education Specialist will prepare and deliver Asombro’s award-winning science education programs to students throughout New Mexico and the El Paso, Texas region. S/he will also assist with Asombro’s teacher workshops, help develop new inquiry-based education programs, represent Asombro at events and meetings with partner organizations, and participate in volunteer recruitment, marketing, fundraising and site maintenance activities.

 

Minimum qualifications include a Bachelor’s degree in natural science or related field (graduate degree a plus) and 2 years experience teaching natural science concepts using hands-on, inquiry-based methods to K-12 students and teachers. We’re looking for a very well organized person with the ability to juggle multiple projects and tasks under deadlines. Excellent pubic speaking and writing skills are required. Candidate must have a valid U.S. driver’s license, be able to pass a background check, and have a working knowledge of common software such as Word, Excel, and Powerpoint (experience with Pages a plus). Other desirable qualifications include previous work with high school students, Spanish fluency, knowledge of desert ecology, familiarity with Next Generation Science Standards, and prior experience with creative lesson development, fundraising, marketing, volunteer management, graphic design, and/or light construction and site maintenance projects.

 

Salary and benefits: $34,000; 12 paid holidays and 22 days of flexible, paid time off

Hours: 40/week including some evenings and weekends when large projects and events occur

Duration: 1 year with high probability of extension, contingent on performance and funding

Start date: Flexible (July 2, 2018 preferred)
