The Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics is a national non-profit that works to protect the outdoors by inspiring and teaching people to enjoy it responsibly. The Center is seeking an Outreach Manager who understands the value of education in creating more responsible recreation experiences across America’s public lands. The ideal candidate will welcome the challenge of developing and expanding programs to elevate and accomplish the Center’s mission. Extensive experience creating, implementing, and leading effective programs to benefit public lands is highly desired. The position requires an individual who is collaborative, well-organized, focused, and professional. Additionally, the ability to be flexible and adaptable, and able and willing to recognize different ways of achieving the same goal, is essential. The right candidate is deeply connected to the outdoors and has experience managing programs specifically related to the sustainable enjoyment of public lands.
SPECIFIC FOCUS AREAS
LEAVE NO TRACE IN EVERY PARK
The goal is that every person who visits a park, forests, or protected areas has the opportunity to learn about and put Leave No Trace into action. Leave No Trace in Every Park ensures that our shared lands continue to thrive because people understand what it means to enjoy them responsibly.
Hot Spots is a critical initiative for areas suffering from severe impacts of outdoor recreation that can thrive again with Leave No Trace solutions. Each location receives a unique, sitespecific blend of trainings, expert consulting, education programs for youth and adults, service projects, monitoring programs and more. The end result is that such areas on the road to recovery with specialized Leave No Trace educational programs and tools in place.
GOLD STANDARD SITES
These are showcase areas that have robust Leave No Trace programming on site. The objectives of Gold Standard Sites are to:
1) Recognize land management agencies nation-wide that are comprehensively implementing Leave No Trace;
2) Develop a national blueprint to put Leave No Trace in every American park, forest, and protected area;
3) Institute specific leadership trainings for park managers and other influencers including guides, outfitters, and concessionaires;
4) Enlist additional Gold Standard Sites nationally.
Thousands of engaged individuals have expressed a desire to get involved with the Center through volunteer efforts. In addition to traditional involvement such as teaching Leave No Trace to others, the Center’s Citizen Science program allows volunteers the ability to contribute meaningfully to the Leave No Trace in Every Park initiative through field-based efforts. Additional Focus Areas: Training, Community Partnerships, Volunteer Engagement
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
• Manage fundamental, long-term organizational initiatives
• Collaborate with land managers (federal, state, and local) and key stakeholders to jointly develop inclusive, multiday education, outreach, and volunteer experiences for public lands visitors of all ages
• Craft and implement new strategies for achieving sustainable recreation on public lands
• Act as an ambassador for the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics in order to foster relationships with key stakeholders for increasing the effectiveness of programs
• Monitor implementation of programs and adapt methods for evaluating program effectiveness and success
• Work with remote, mobile education teams to complete over 150 strategic events annually
• Participate in field-based outdoor programming ranging from single to multi-day outings
• Support staff by participating in specific projects and evaluating program implementation and success
• Ensure that program activities operate within the best practices of the organization
• Implement strategies that maximize alignment between program areas
• Provide dynamic and engaging educational workshops and presentations
• Assist partner organizations with program delivery
• Bachelor’s degree in resource conservation, natural resource management, or similar field, required; Master’s degree in similar field preferred
• Minimum of five years of working with or for federal, state, county, or municipal land management agencies
• Extensive knowledge of land management agency structure, operations, and culture
• Deep understanding of natural resource monitoring and recreation planning frameworks
• Demonstrated experience developing and executing effective education, outreach, and training initiatives focused on public lands
• Established track record of working successfully with partner organizations on joint programs in pursuit of shared goals
• Expertise in evaluating the effectiveness of programs, and the skills to adjust programs to make them more impactful
• Ability to build relationships and collaborate effectively across a wide variety of communities and stakeholders
• Strong interpersonal skills including communication, leadership, and teamwork
• Creative thinker with the ability to develop or seek out innovative approaches and strategies to meet goals and objectives
• Ability to manage, prioritize, and execute many projects simultaneously, and meet predetermined success metrics
• Excellent writing skills
• Travel within the U.S. Travel required 10-20% of the time
• Online learning/online course development skills desired
• Leave No Trace Master Educator Training preferred
