Program Overview:

 

The Desert Oasis Teaching Garden is a community education and experiential learning space to explore the potential for growing food in the arid Southwest. The DOT Garden works with students and teachers at Albuquerque Academy & APS, as well as offers adult classes and workshops for the larger ABQ community. Incorporating regenerative agriculture and permaculture principles, the space provides food for the campus dining halls, CSA, community events, and small scale value-added production.

 

Albuquerque Academy is an independent day school, serving approximately 1100 students in grades 6-12. The department of Experiential Education comprises the school’s Outdoor Education, Sustainability Education, and Community & Global Citizenship programs and is comprised of seven full time faculty members, one seasonal field faculty member, and two interns (one who works with the Outdoor Education Program one who works with the Sustainability program). The department helps support and enhance the school’s rigorous college-preparatory curriculum with a mandatory curriculum of both outdoor and service experiences.

 

Internship Overview:  

 

The Garden and Sustainability internship is a part-time to full-time position (based on applicants’ availability and interest) for the 2018-2019 school year (August 2018 through May 2019). The internship is intended to support the development of a relatively new professional to the field of sustainability education and should provide excellent experience to support future professional goals. Additional opportunities for local professional development will be available to support the intern’s growth over the school year.

 

Compensation:

 

·         $5000 Stipend

·         Health insurance will be offered during the period of employment (FT only)

·         Lunches provided on campus daily.

·         Weekly CSA share available from beginning of August – end of September

·         Attendance to local agriculture and education conferences (Ex: Quivira, NM Organic Conf.)

 

Responsibilities:

 

·         Leading the Environmental Club students, 6th grade through 12th grade (Tues/Thurs availability required)

·         Coordinate and lead on-campus Community Service events (5/semester, 2-4:30pm availability required)

·         Assist with DOTG Community Events (Community Day, Plant Sale, Open House, etc. These may fall on Saturdays – weekly hours can be adjusted to reflect weekend work hours)

·         Assist with class visits to the garden.

·         Learning and practicing the basics of regenerative agriculture and integrating this knowledge into an outdoor, experiential setting.  

·         Assist with garden maintenance.

·         Attend Sustainability Committee meetings and planning sessions (FT only unless PT schedule allows)

·         Assist with weekly volunteer program (FT only)

·         Learning how to integrate garden curriculum primarily into science courses, but also into various other middle and high school coursework. (FT only)

·         Assist with off-campus community outreach and programming (FT only)

Requirements & Preferences:

 

·         Must be at least 18 years or older

·         Bachelors’ degree preferred

·         Interest exploring a career in environmental education/sustainability, service learning, and/or experiential education

·         Experience working in a garden or farm preferred

·         Experience working with youth, grades 6-12 students preferred

·         Excellent interpersonal & problem-solving skills

·         Experience working with diverse populations

·         Demonstrated commitment to social justice, equity, and inclusion

·         Well-developed organizational skills

·         Excellent written and verbal communication

·         Able to pass a background check

·         Clean driving record
